After Paul's death, Charles goes travelling and Florence, who still hasn't found favour with her father, finds herself alone in the large family home. Charles remarries, to a greedy woman who turns out to be his ruin. It is only many years later that Dombais, old, alone and penniless, becomes aware of his daughter's undivided love for him...
